New Lyme test gets study
Commentary: Lyme disease without a classical EM rash may be missed by presently available testing. This is the stage of the disease when it is curable. A study at Columbia University is examining SpiroFind, a test developed in the Netherlands, to measure immunological signs of early infection, compared to established tests that look for markers that develop after the infection has been present for a number of weeks. Inflammatory molecules called cytokines are produced in both early and late disease, and researchers have recently identified some specific markers that may help to identify early borrelia infection. The article outlining the science of this approach was published in PLoS ONE 9(4): e93243. Serum Inflammatory Mediators as Markers of Human Lyme Disease Activity.
